A former Colorado Gov. and 2008 presidential candidate, John Hickenlooper, is working to build a campaign focused on Colorado's economy and healthcare system, a source close to the former two-term governor said Thursday.
"Hickenlooper is starting to talk to people," the source said. "He wants to do some serious fundraising and he wants to see if he can be viable."
In an interview on ABC's "This Week," Hickenlooper said he's "definitely" planning a presidential run in 2020.
He wants to promote his ideas for what he called a "middle-ground" Republican and Democrat approach.
Hickenlooper would be the second Democrat to run for president, joining former Vice President Joe Biden, who has remained in the race.
The source said Hickenlooper is likely to get an exploratory committee on the ballot in Colorado next year.
Hickenlooper, a former geologist, first ran for Colorado governor in 2006, losing the election to then-Gov. Bill Ritter. He served as governor from 2011 to 2014 and was a two-term mayor of Denver.
"You know, I think in the United States today, we've really needed middle ground," Hickenlooper said on "This Week." "And it's kind of the middle ground is a lot of people are searching for."
He added: "The average American is running around trying to get his or her kids ready to go to school, trying to feed the family, trying to pay the mortgage or rent or whatever it may be."
Hickenlooper's last presidential run in 2016 was unsuccessful, when he finished a distant fifth in the Iowa caucuses. He didn't do well in the New Hampshire primary either, finishing a distant sixth. He dropped out of the race after winning just one state, Massachusetts.
But the source close to Hickenlooper said the former governor is still on the campaign trail, meeting and talking to people about a future presidential run.
"He's just gearing up for a potential campaign," the source said.I[NTRODUCTION]{.smallcaps} {#sec1-1}
